Twenty-third week of pregnancy

Future child

Height - 28-29 cm, weight - 550-580 g.

The child has reached the size of a small doll. The first real hair appears on his head, and the lanugo fluff, which covers his body, begins to darken.

The baby is growing fat and showing more and more activity. It seems that he is constantly spinning and spinning inside mom. But it turns out that the child mostly sleeps, but not for many hours in a row, but in phase: he sleeps for 50 minutes, has some fun (grabs the umbilical cord and pushes into the amniotic fluid, hits the walls of the uterus with his arms and legs, etc.). A child's heart beats in the same rhythm, therefore, he does not yet experience a sleep of different phases, like an adult.

The nerve fibers of the child's muscles are increasingly fused with the nerve fibers of the spinal cord. Therefore, his reflexes are getting better and better. Now he really sucks his finger, and does not just put it in his mouth.

The baby's pancreas actively produces insulin, which breaks down sugar for better absorption by the body, and in the fetus it is a hormone necessary for growth. The development of the pancreas began at the earliest stages of pregnancy (3-4 weeks). Interestingly, mom and baby do not exchange this hormone.

The mother's insulin does not pass to the baby through the placenta, and the baby's insulin cannot enter the mother's blood. Therefore, the hypothesis that pregnant women tolerate diabetes mellitus more easily than non-pregnant women should be considered a myth. By the way, if the mother is sick with diabetes, then the child is born with high insulin levels.

According to the criteria of the World Health Organization, adopted in our country, babies born after 22 weeks of pregnancy and weighing 500 g must be provided with resuscitation care. Both doctors and lawyers believe, therefore, that a child at this age can already survive and, therefore, has all the rights to emergency medical care.

We especially draw your attention to this, since you can still hear the stories of unfortunate mothers who gave birth to a child who had already reached 25-28 weeks of development and a weight of 900-1000 grams, who was considered doomed and did not provide the necessary intensive care. So, from the full 22nd week of pregnancy, the birth of a child cannot be considered a miscarriage, but is a premature birth with all the ensuing conclusions.

Future mom

The average weight gain this week is about 6.5 kg. The uterus is 3.5 cm above the navel, the bottom height is 23 cm (plus or minus 2 cm).

This week you can feel not only the baby's movements (quite distinct and varied), but also the so-called Braxton Hicks contractions. These are still not real contractions and not even alarming symptoms of premature birth. It's just that your uterus is preparing for childbirth and its cervix gradually begins to train: it narrows and expands, simulating labor pains.

This is the Braxton-Hicks contractions (popularly called "Braxtons"). They appear and disappear without any regularity. In this, "braxtons" differ from real labor pains, which have their own clear rhythm. "Braxtons" can occur even from the 20th week of pregnancy, but they become really distinct at the end of the 2nd trimester, somewhere from 27-28 weeks of pregnancy.

To understand if you are having a preterm labor, time your contraction. They should not occur more than 2 times per hour; about 5 attacks per day are considered normal. The contractions should not be painful and rather resemble a pulling sensation before menstruation. After a few seconds, the Braxtons are gone.

Now it's time to talk about the most important thing - about the state of mind of a woman during pregnancy. The term prenatal depression has also gradually come into common use. Nevertheless, it is worth warning against too superficial and light attitude to the problem.

These are not only tears, mood swings in a pregnant woman. Unfortunately, if depression reaches a certain stage, it spills over into somatic disorders and can affect the course of pregnancy.

Antepartum depression begins imperceptibly with the first crisis that occurs after a positive pregnancy test. No matter how desirable a child is, the very fact that it already exists makes a woman nervous. After all, now she belongs not only to herself, but also to the child, and must do everything to endure him and give birth to healthy.

Most women rush to books, magazines, the Internet in search of "ideal recipes" for pregnancy, answers to how "should be done right." As a result, she receives a lot of instructions, which she is simply unable to fulfill inside and out, and even really understand.

Stress begins with a sense of guilt "I'm not an ideal mother." Very often this stress takes on dangerous forms, since it is the desire to be an ideal mother that sometimes, oddly enough, leads to a completely opposite result. A woman becomes impressionable, easily controllable, fears literally everything.

She is especially afraid of terrible stories about childbirth in our hospitals and suddenly, at some stage, she decides to abandon official medicine, since it is supposedly dangerous. As a result, she follows the lead of charlatans, stops consulting with doctors and even categorically declares that she will give birth at home with one of the so-called "spiritual midwives." Thus, the child's life is in clear danger.

What to do in this case? Remember, no matter how afraid of doctors you are, this is your and only your phobia. Of course, our official medicine is far from ideal, but you can always find a doctor who can be trusted 100%, you just have to take the time and make a minimum of effort. But giving birth at home means that you definitely do without special equipment, without a team of doctors and without all the resources of the hospital that can provide assistance in an emergency.

The next crisis: "I will have time for everything." This is especially true of business women who led a very active life and built a career before giving birth. They cannot but be frightened by the fact that their activity should be reduced for quite a long time. Such women can start a new business from scratch at the 20th week of pregnancy, work up to 40 weeks and leave for the hospital directly from the office.

Of course, this is often due to material difficulties. The desire to make money is quite understandable and there is nothing you can do about it. But think about it, if you have enough money, or if you have a husband who is able to support a family, then why all this strenuous activity? To whom and what do you want to prove by threatening your child's health?

There is no need to give up everything, but it is worth putting them in a reasonable framework and admitting that "we have no irreplaceable ones." All problems can wait, any issue can be resolved without your participation. Consider if this is what you are concerned about?

The third crisis: "How fat and terrible I am!" It starts from about 12-15 weeks of pregnancy, when it is too early to talk about the real thickness. You are not fat, you are pregnant. It's not for long. After giving birth, you will return to your previous size, unless you eat off all 9 months of pies and cakes. Yes, even if you do, active shaping, a therapeutic sauna and massage will help you. The only thing that cannot be processed is stretch marks, but with special creams and massage their number and brightness can be reduced.

The fourth crisis: "How bad I am!" It is clear that toxicosis does not make anyone happy. Fatigue constantly falls on you, you do not get enough sleep, you become irritable, you break down at everyone. But still try to control yourself. If you snap at someone or cry more than once a day, you should learn to abstract yourself from the negativity, regardless of who is right or who is wrong from your point of view. Meditate, breathe slowly and deeply, try to rest several times a day for at least a few minutes.

The fifth crisis: "How lonely I am, no one loves me and does not understand me!" Of course you are alone. Who else besides you understands your pregnancy? Nobody, except, perhaps, the same "shores" like you. Get used to the fact that your pregnancy is YOUR pregnancy. The rest are not like you, because they are not pregnant. They do not have your hormones, your toxicosis, your fears, your complexes, they are not afraid of an AFP test or an ultrasound scan, they are not troubled in transport, they do not grow out of all their belongings weekly. Look for your own kind. Chat with the little girls while you are in the queue for an appointment with the doctor, sign up for preparation courses for childbirth, there is often a very nice society gathering there - believe me, there will always be those people who will support and understand you. You shouldn't be offended at your loved ones, maybe it's better to explain your condition to them more clearly?

Sixth crisis (for primiparous): "What am I going to do with it ?!" This thought appears just in the twenties of pregnancy, when the expectant mother is already thinking about childbirth and what to buy for the baby. She suddenly dawns on the thought that she has no idea what they are doing with newborn babies. Those. She already has a concept (books, courses, the Internet), but she can hardly imagine herself in this occupation. There is only one recipe - it will pass by itself. We assure you that after giving birth, you yourself will know how to change your baby's clothes, bathe, feed. If you are not able to do something, the nurses in the hospital will teach you. This is not difficult.

Seventh crisis - "I'm afraid to give birth!" Ask yourself which is better: to give birth after all or to walk with a 20-30 week tummy all your life? The answer is obvious, right? You will still have to give birth, and by 36-39 weeks the woman does not have a fear of childbirth, but a desire to give birth as soon as possible, so it gets boring to drag a pregnant belly. The stories of those who have already given birth are saved from the fear of childbirth, as well as the consultation of your doctor (in the maternity hospital or on courses), who will tell you in detail about how the childbirth proceeds and how you can pain relief (if you want). In the modern world, childbirth is not at all what it was 100 or even 50 years ago. The chances that everything will go well, especially in the absence of pathologies, is 99%. Labor pain is quite unpleasant, but childbirth is really the most joyful event in life, you will feel it when your baby is on your chest.

If you are very afraid of giving birth, ask your husband or your mother to attend. Choose a doctor who, besides being a good professional, is humanly sympathetic to you. He will be able to calm you down during childbirth, cheer you up. In general, the more carefully and in advance you prepare for childbirth (choose a maternity hospital, a doctor, an insurance company, a baby's dowry), the calmer you will feel when everything starts. After all, we are not afraid of the terrible, but of the unknown.

Scientists have found out how psychological stress affects the course of childbirth.

Experiences due to the relationship with the spouse lead to the absence of a reflex cry of the newborn, although asphyxia has not been diagnosed. If a girl is expected, then the threat of miscarriage or premature birth increases, in boys, on the contrary, prolonged labor.

Increased irritability of the mother (fatigue, insomnia) - premature birth of girls.

Overloading at school or at work can cause premature birth, moreover, rapid labor, and also lead to the absence of screaming when girls are born.

Sleep disturbances associated with stress, internal dissatisfaction, problems with loved ones lead to the entanglement of the umbilical cord in boys at birth (emotionally stressful antenatal hyperactivity), and girls experience premature or rapid labor.

Negative relationships within the family or with parents, as well as problems within the work collective, lead to premature drainage and childbirth in boys.

Severe fear and panic attack syndrome arise from a lack of confidence in a husband and marriage, as well as possible financial problems. Boys have premature births. Girls have rapid childbirth in the absence of the cry of a newborn.

In particular, fear can be expressed in the form of fear of childbirth, this is especially difficult for girls who may have a post-term pregnancy, very long childbirth and lack of cry.

And your loved ones must remember that in no case should you dismiss even the most absurd problems of a pregnant woman. Show us a minimum of sympathetic attention though. Repeat the magic phrase: "Honey, you are so tired, poor, how I feel sorry for you! How can I help you?"

More often than not, it turns out that there is nothing special to help, it is enough just to stand around like this and listen to how bad she is and how tired she is. But with this simple action, you can significantly help the child and his mother.
