Air carriers use many different aircraft for transportation. Sometimes these vehicles fall, and not always due to terrorist attacks. For example, more than 500 early Boeing 737 aircraft are still in use, which have been in production since 1988.
When such a liner of Itek Air crashed in Kyrgyzstan in 2008, the European Union banned this carrier from flying to Europe. The security level was very low. It is these incidents that help explain why certain models are included in the ranking of the most dangerous aircraft. After all, they really get into accidents most often.
As machines get old, they require more maintenance than new ones. In addition, outdated models are often used by low-cost carriers who simply do not have the means to fully maintain their equipment and train pilots.
BusinessWeek has compiled a rating of the most dangerous aircraft based on data from the insurance company Ascend. This list contains really popular aircraft, which are operated all over the world in the amount of at least a hundred pieces.
Boeing 737 JT8D. This aircraft has an average of one crash per 507.5 thousand flight hours. As this figure decreases, the probability of an accident increases. The successful Boeing model was produced from 1967 to 1988. Even today, 517 of these airliners are flying around the world. These are mainly the poorest countries. The first version of the 737th model is considered the most emergency. The last major accident involving this car occurred in 2008 near Bishkek. Then the plane of the Kyrgyz carrier fell, which at that time was already about 30 years old. 68 people died in that accident.
IL-76. This aircraft began to be produced back in 1974, and has been rolling off the assembly line ever since. One IL-76 crash occurs in 549,900 flight hours. 247 of these machines are still in operation. They are mainly used by small airlines in the former Soviet Union, as well as in Africa and the Middle East. In 2007, there was one of the largest air crashes with the participation of this liner. The plane of the Iranian airline Revolutionary Guard crashed 275 people.
Tu-154. The two planes were far ahead of their competitors in terms of danger. Flying in another brainchild of the Soviet aircraft industry is twice as calm. One disaster occurs every 1.041 million hours. The aircraft has been produced since 1971, and it is still relevant today. There are 336 such liners in use now. Tu-154 also flies mainly in the countries of the former Soviet Union, on domestic routes. In the same Iran, only since 2002, there have already been 4 accidents involving this aircraft. The most recent occurred on July 15, 2009, when a Tu-154 on a Tehran-Yerevan flight crashed near Qazvin. In that crash, 168 people died.
Airbus A310. The aircraft was produced in 1983-1998. There are currently 191 such Airbus in operation. With the participation of this liner, there is one disaster per 1,067,700 flight hours. Major carriers have not used such a European aircraft for a long time. But companies from poorer countries continue to use it. An example is Pakistani International Airlines. The most recent A310 crash occurred on June 30, 2009. Then the Yemenia Airlines liner on its way from Yemen to the Comoros fell into the open sea. 153 people died, only a 12-year-old girl was miraculously saved.
McDonnell-Douglas DC-9. This aircraft was produced in 1965-1982. So the youngest specimen is already 30 years old. But 315 such devices are regularly used. One DC-9 accident occurs in 1,068,700 flight hours. In 1997, McDonnell-Douglas ceased to exist, becoming part of Boeing. However, its older planes are used by many small carriers, and even by the large American company Delta Airlines. The age of the fleet sometimes leads to accidents. For example, in April 2008, a Hewa Bora Airways plane crashed in Congo, killing 44 people.
Tu-134. The popular Soviet airliner was produced in 1964-1986. Until now, 223 of these machines rise into the sky. One Tu-134 accident occurs every 1,087,600 hours in the sky. The liner managed to become the most massive in Soviet civil aviation; it is still used in Russia and in the neighboring countries. However, the noise level of the aircraft engines exceeds European standards, which is why Tu-134 flies mainly on domestic airlines. In August 2004, there was one of the major accidents involving such an aircraft. The airliner of the Volga-Aviaexpress air carrier crashed. Then all 43 people on board were killed.
Boeing 727. This legendary aircraft was produced in 1963-1984. Until now, 412 of these machines are in use. One crash occurs on average for 2,306,300 flight hours. It must be admitted that most of the major airlines have long ago gotten rid of the outdated Boeing 727s. For example, United Airlines donated such a liner back in 1993 to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. But outside the United States, this model is still widely used, especially by charter carriers. One of the most memorable tragedies involving a Boeing 727 occurred in Benin on Christmas Day 2003. Then the catastrophe claimed the lives of 151 people.
McDonnell-Douglas MD-80. The popular liner was produced in 1980-1999. Even today there are 923 of these machines on flights. On average, one accident occurs in 2,332,300 flight hours. This model replaced the outdated DC-9, although it has already been discontinued, such liners are still used by the American company Delta. And Europeans from SAS Alitalia consider the plane to be still suitable for transportation. But in August 2008, the MD-80 of the Spanish company Spanai crashed while flying from Madrid to the Canary Islands. Then 153 people died.
McDonnell-Douglas DC-10. Surprisingly, this aircraft belongs to that rare type of aircraft, whose safety only increases with age. The DC-10 was produced from 1971 to 1989. Even today, 153 of these aircraft are in use. One accident occurs on average for 2,908,800 flight hours. But in the 1970s, there were so many disasters that it was decided to significantly change and improve the design of the aircraft. As a result, the last major accident involving DC-10 happened in 1999. Then in Guatemala the liner of the former French operator AOM crashed. Today DC-10 is operated by the only airline - Biman Bangladesh.
McDonnell-Douglas MD-11. This model of the American manufacturer was produced in 1990-2001. She turned out to be not very successful, in particular her indicators of fuel consumption frightened. But even today, Finair and KLM still use the MD-11, mainly for cargo transportation. A total of 187 such aircraft are operated in the world. One accident occurs in 3,668,800 flight hours. The last disaster dates back to 1999. Then at the China Airlines company in Hong Kong, MD-11 caught fire during the landing approach during the hurricane. The accident claimed the lives of three people.
