How not to throw away food


While many countries suffer from hunger, humanity sends half of the food it produces to landfills every year. Such data is provided by the UN. Two billion tons of food is lost due to poor transportation, storage, expired expiration dates. Marketing policy forces people to purchase goods they do not need, which we simply do not have time to consume.

As a result, humanity is faced with a crisis of overproduction. And the following tips will help with this.

Buy more often but in smaller quantities. As soon as you start planning your grocery purchases, the problem of food waste will disappear. Prepare perishable foods immediately after purchasing them. This will not let them disappear ahead of time. But ready-made dishes can be simply reheated for a week. But this method is not suitable for those who are used to eating exclusively freshly prepared food. They can be advised millet to make purchases more often.

Buy ugly vegetables and fruits. One French supermarket even ran an ad campaign encouraging people to buy huge apples, ugly oranges and shapeless vegetables. Usually, vegetables and fruits of irregular shape rarely get on store shelves, but the market is full of them. And even if they are outwardly ugly, the quality of such products is excellent. If we create a demand for them, then this will help them fulfill their purpose, and not go to the trash heap.

Don't let good food go bad. It turns out that many products began to deteriorate early, due to improper storage. It is worth learning exactly how to store certain types of vegetables and fruits. Tomatoes are often refrigerated, although they require room temperature. It is best to wrap greens in paper and put them in a bag, making several holes in it for ventilation. One rotten fruit can spoil all the others stored next to it. So it would be better to immediately throw away individual spoiled products, without waiting for a general "epidemic".

Investigate which mode your refrigerator is operating in. Few people know that not all refrigerator shelves cool food equally. The best place to store poultry and meat is on the lower shelves, the coldest ones. But semi-finished products and ready-made products can lie even higher, in a warmer zone. The warmest temperature in the refrigerator is at the door, which is a great place for food additives and ketchups. But dairy products and eggs have nothing to do there.

Be skeptical about the expiration dates on the label. Not all products become unusable within the terms indicated by their manufacturer. Usually this date is indicated for retailers. It remains for us to be guided by our taste, smell and simple prudence. A product that is about to expire the other day may still be edible, but it won't be fresh for sure. Is it worth the risk?

Use your creativity. The very best dishes rarely come from new and whole foods. Usually they are prepared from what was left and turned up at hand. Creativity in cooking comes from unnecessary waste. The same chicken bones and vegetable leftovers can form the basis of the broth. Stale bread together with herbs can turn into delicious croutons, leftover meat with rice mixed with an egg - why not a ready-made hearty dinner?

Take care of conservation. This is not only about the usual twists and salting. Leftover food can be preserved and stored in the freezer. It is best to pre-blanch vegetables to preserve their color and nutrients. First, they must be dipped in boiling water for a few minutes, and then immediately in ice cold. After that, vegetables can be packed in airtight packaging.

Share your food. Each of us has food in the refrigerator that we don't want to eat, and it's a pity to throw it away. In developed countries, whole organizations have been created that accept food in the form of donations. And if in America Food Runners are known, in Russia this practice has not yet developed. In any case, the problem of the homeless has not yet been resolved, and your unnecessary products will certainly help them.
